Caladiums

Caladiums

If you love the look of the elephant ear plant (Alocasia spp.) but want more colorful varieties, then Caladiums are perfect for you! Not to be outdone by their larger relatives, Caladiums shine all on their own with their wide array of colors, from green leaves with speckles of white to green with white and pink centers. So, if you think you have too much green (is there such a thing?) in your indoor jungle, Caladiums are the perfect partner to brighten up your home.

General Care

Sunlight:
Indoors, place your Caladium in a well-lit spot away from direct sunlight. Outdoors, in a warm climate, it can receive part shade.

Water:
Water occasionally, allowing the plant to slightly dry out between waterings.

Humidity:
Average home humidity is fine; it can tolerate dry air.

Soil:
Using a well-draining potting mix is essential.

Common Problems

Pests:
Caladiums are generally easy-going plants that add vibrancy to your home. Treat pests as soon as they appear with weekly sprays of a natural pesticide like neem oil and regular wipe-downs of the plant.

Symptoms and Causes:

  • Brown, crispy new growth: Caused by overexposure to sun or underwatering.
  • Dormant growth, no growth: This occurs in cooler months; wait until the warmer season and consider using liquid fertilizer.
  • Yellow/mushy old leaves: Typically caused by root rot or insufficient light.

Precautions

Caladiums can be irritating to cats, dogs, and humans if the foliage is consumed. Take extra care when planting, pruning, and ensuring they are out of reach of children and pets.
